Lost Souls Specific Terms and Acronyms

A

Adventuring Company

The organization of players on Lost Souls roughly equivalent to clans and guilds elsewhere

Affiliation

A term that encompasses guilds, associations, faculties, and offices.

Almeria

The continent that most of the action centers around, also known as the "main map"

Anthrope

Roughly human-like creature; see 'help anthrope' in-game

Areas <location>

A courtesy announcement that someone is using area attacks that may affect bystanders wandering through, most commonly seen on the OOC channel

AOLP

Amulet of Life Protection, an item that attempts to save your life if you are about to die. See also LP.

Association

Similar to a guild, but where normally a character can only belong to one guild, there is no inherent limit on the number of associations one can join

Atman

The 'oversoul' or user account that your incarnoi are attached to. One atman/account can have a large number of incarnoi/characters attached to it. Plural: atmai.

Autonomon

A technical term, normally used only by developers, for a non-player character. Contrasts with incarnos. Plural: autonomoi.

Standard Lost Souls unit of volume, equal to a liter, which is slightly more than a quart

Chaos Infusion, Chaos Infused

Challenge

A mini-quest that Travelers can bestow upon others. Challenges involve an obstacle (e.g. unluckiness) and a goal (e.g. gain experience). Players eagerly seek challenges because their successful completion bestows rewards.

CMed

Combat meditation, a hidden skill

CN

Conceptual navigation, an occurrence of teleportation

D

DC

Diabolical/Chaotic, maximally evil and chaotic alignment. Usually associated with grouping or associations. Diametrically opposite of SO.

Obsolete: Drow City, now most often referred to by its name, Yathryn

Dekan

Standard Lost Souls unit of mass, equal to a kilogram, which is about two and a fifth pounds

Dimin

Standard Lost Souls unit of distance, equal to a decimeter — ten centimeters, about four inches — making someone 15 dimins tall slightly under five feet and someone 18 dimins tall slightly under six feet

Disincarnate

To quit out of Lost Souls (normally going to the atman menu)

A form of self-mutilation in which one deletes one's character or entire atman because one is so very martyred by some transitory inconvenience one has suffered. The behavior appears in many contexts, and is probably best known by the term 'ragequit', but the term 'emodelete' was first coined on Lost Souls by Erebus.

A set of capabilities that in some ways may resemble a guild or association, but which is not social in nature; for example, elven racial abilities and wild psi talents

Flub

Accidental sending of a message to the wrong communication channel

Frag

A gem fragment, used to augment Sentinel Armour

Shortened form of Parageos, the plate version of Paraxos armour

GLC

Green Lantern Corps, a guild

Hand

The Hand of Eris. Sometimes a small complaint/desire to have it oneself, often expressed as "Who has the Hand?".

Hastur'd

The process of being the victim of a Hastur invocation

Hivemind

A semi-fictitious entity manifesting in the tendency of experienced developers to make similar responses simultaneously

Incarnos

A player character. Plural: incarnoi.

The act of disincarnating and then reincarnating again. Often to check to see if a brief problem is fixed, or to benefit from a new change. Not really a LS specific term, but used often in LS.

Saintly/Ordered, maximally good and ordered alignment. Usually associated with grouping or associations. Diametrically opposite of DC.

The behavior of some areas, mostly settlements, where attacking a citizen will result in defenders from elsewhere in the area coming to attack you

Computer Role-Playing Game; sometimes used to distinguish the genre of computer games called "RPGs", which usually have little to nothing to do with role-playing and would be more appropriately termed "stat-building games", from games in which one actually plays the role of a fictional character

A term, intended to be value-neutral, for someone whose preferred mode of play is to optimize their character's performance, from a game-mechanical perspective, for some particular purpose, most typically combat and/or rapidly gaining experience. Often perceived to be in conflict with the play style that values RP. A slightly derogatory term for the optimizer is Powergamer, and a more strongly derogatory term is Twink.
