Death and Dying
Death and dying in Lost Souls is not uncommon, nor is it (generally) the end of your character.
- When your character's head reaches zero hit points, or your chest reaches -25% of its hit points (it begins bleeding at zero), you die. At that point your spirit leaves your body as an insubstantial ghost. Your equipment will remain on your corpse until and unless you recover it.
- Usually, your ghost will be pulled to a location where you can return to life; exactly where this is will depend on various things including your location, what deities you worship, and so on. Some effects can prevent this from taking place, however.
- The most common way of returning to life is to pray at an altar to a deity, though methods can vary. Some characters may also be able to resurrect you. Ghosts are nearly invulnerable, are intangible and can fly, and thus your ghostly form can be used to explore the world and even complete some exploration-related quests.
- Death is a traumatic event, and your character can be affected in various ways by it ('show effects' to see these). Be prepared to potentially have to cope with some significant problems as a consequence of dying, though some priests or healers may be able to assist in removing these effects.
- Your character begins with ten lives, and loses one with each death. You can have up to 15 lives. Those atmai who are at the Beginner or Intermediate stages get unlimited lives. If you ever run out of lives completely, your character dies permanently.
- There are various methods of receiving extra lives, including completing Traveler challenges, buying them from priests (Gredius in Losthaven, for example), and so on.
List of places where to get lives
- Pay 50,000 gold at a Galduron Priest (such as Gredius), or 5,000 if you're a Gatherer. This gold can be pulled from your bank account.
- Pay 15,000 gold at the Temple of Illuvatar at Liathyr. You need to have it on hand.
- Yehovites can get lives for ??? gold at either Losthaven or Camelot. They can also get them from confession rewards (unconfirmed?).
- Discordians may purchase lives at the Leah's Hill Discordian Church.
- As a Kazarak, feed magical items to the pillar (biased for when you have <=3)
- Traveler challenges (random)
- Random Eris bestowal from a sacrifice.
- As the Hand of Eris, receiving a random bestowal.
- Rarely, from the Deck of Changes. Do not actually use this
