-- Cautious: Fight on a moderately defensive footing, giving avoiding injury priority over harming the enemy.  You will attempt to defend against attacks so long as this leaves you with at least one attack in a given round.&lt;br /&gt;

-- Defensive: Concentrate completely on defense, forgoing offense altogether.  You will attempt to defend against attacks under all circumstances. Possibly the best thing to be said about it is that it would be very difficult for an opponent to anticipate one's actions.  No effort will be spent on defense whatsoever.  You will scatter your attacks one hundred percent of the time.&lt;br /&gt;

-- Passive: Complete passivity, engaging in neither offense nor defense. Normally, this represents one's behavior when paralyzed, but you can select this combat mode if you wish to allow your attacker to kill you.  No effort will be spent on defense whatsoever.&lt;br /&gt;

This lack of concern for self-preservation opens up much better opportunities to hit one's opponent. You will attempt to defend against attacks only so long as this does not prevent you from performing any of your own attacks.
