-Drakes are the species of animal sentience closest to dragons. Drakes are enormous winged lizards capable of breathing deadly energies upon their prey. While drakes are not the optimal candidates for the Ranger bond, they take well enough to it, and confer upon their Rangers the ability to replenish their phlogiston glands. But the main advantage of having a drake as a familiar is not this, nor the strength and abilities enjoined, but the drake itself. Drakes are ferocious combatants, and having one as one's animal soulmate is a tremendous boon.+

Drakes are the bestial cousins of dragons, lacking the high intelligence of that species. They are considered more dangerous than dragons in that they are more likely to attack out of hunger, surprise, or just general viciousness, but their animal minds make them less formidable opponents. Like dragons, they are known for their ability to breathe fire or stranger substances, though the latter capacity seems rarer in drakes than in dragons.
