Tower shields may require 2 hands to use
Mantlets are basically mobile walls.
Shields do crushing damage to a medium area when attacking
- Shields also come in a razor variety (eg razor target shield) that has a razor sharp edge, allowing it to do cutting damage
- Shields also come in a spiked variety (eg spiked buckler) that has sharp protrusions on its surface which will do piercing damage
Massive Blow and Precision Strike add small amounts to the deflection rating of a shield
Shields will not completely block melee weapon attacks, but instead either deflect the damage, absorb some of the impact of the direct hit, or reduce the effectiveness of the hit, largely depending on the weapon used against the shield. Some weapons are designed to reduce the effectiveness of shields, while others just have enough mass that even though the shield blocked the slashing aspect of it, the raw concussion traveled through the shield and into the wielder. If a shield absorbs some of the impact of a direct hit, it will become damaged in the process and lose some of its protective abilities.
Shields can completely deflect or block some unarmed and ranged attacks.
