Set Combat Mode

Usage: set combat mode to <name>

Sets the combat mode you will use when fighting. This is your general approach to battle -- whether you focus more on offense or defense, more attacks or more effective attacks, and so on. The combat modes known to you are:

  • Aggressive: Attack aggressively, letting defense slip somewhat in seeking better shots. In this mode, your attacks are a bit faster, more accurate, and more effective, but also a bit more tiring. You will attempt to defend against attacks so long as this costs you no more than one of your own attacks in a given round, and leaves you with at least one attack. You will perform at a minimum level of confidence of ten percent, or as near to this as you are able. You will scatter your attacks at least five percent of the time.
  • All-Out: Intentionally fighting with no defense, similarly to reckless mode but with even an excellent opportunity to protect oneself foregone. No effort will be spent on defense whatsoever. You will perform at a minimum level of confidence of fifty percent, or as near to this as you are able. You will scatter your attacks at least fifteen percent of the time.
  • Balanced: Balances offense and defense, speed and effectiveness, giving no single concern priority over any other. You will attempt to defend against attacks so long as this costs you no more than one of your own attacks in a given round, and leaves you with at least one attack.
  • Berserk: A state of enraged fury in which one's entire consciousness is given over to attack. Berserkers fight in a wild flurry of frenetically powerful blows. Accuracy suffers somewhat, and tremendous energy is put into each attack. No effort will be spent on defense whatsoever. You will exert yourself at or above a minimum level of effort of one hundred fifty percent. You will perform at the maximum level of confidence you are able to use. You will scatter your attacks at least eighty percent of the time. This combat mode can only be entered under special circumstances, and cannot be simply selected at will.
  • Cautious: Fight on a moderately defensive footing, giving avoiding injury priority over harming the enemy. You will attempt to defend against attacks so long as this leaves you with at least one attack in a given round.
  • Defensive: Concentrate completely on defense, forgoing offense altogether. You will attempt to defend against attacks under all circumstances.
  • Mindless: Fighting, if it can be called that, in a random, uncoordinated manner, essentially just flailing about. One can choose to fight in such a fashion, though it is difficult to say why one would want to. Possibly the best thing to be said about it is that it would be very difficult for an opponent to anticipate one's actions. No effort will be spent on defense whatsoever. You will scatter your attacks one hundred percent of the time.
  • Mock: Fighting in an attempt to score hits while harming one's opponent as little as possible. Appropriate for friendly sparring. You will attempt to defend against attacks so long as this costs you no more than one of your own attacks in a given round, and leaves you with at least one attack.
  • Passive: Complete passivity, engaging in neither offense nor defense. Normally, this represents one's behavior when paralyzed, but you can select this combat mode if you wish to allow your attacker to kill you. No effort will be spent on defense whatsoever.
  • Patient: In this mode, one maintains one's defense while sacrificing quantity of attacks for quality -- waiting for the right opening, aiming carefully, and putting one's full abilities behind each attack. You will attempt to defend against attacks so long as this leaves you with at least one attack in a given round.
  • Protective: Gives overriding priority to defense, though still engaging in offense when an opportunity to do so is available. You will attempt to defend against attacks under all circumstances.
  • Rapid: In this mode, one is concentrating on making as many attacks as possible. Understandably, these attacks are neither very accurate nor very effective, and defense is neglected. On the bright side, each attack in the flurry is less tiring than normal, though all of them together are another matter. You will attempt to defend against attacks only so long as this does not prevent you from performing any of your own attacks. You will perform at a minimum level of confidence of ten percent, or as near to this as you are able. You will scatter your attacks at least twenty percent of the time.
  • Reckless: Highly aggressive attack. Defense is an afterthought, with only a truly excellent chance to dodge or block an attack taken. This lack of concern for self-preservation opens up much better opportunities to hit one's opponent. Attacks under this combat mode are slightly more tiring than otherwise, though no more so than under aggressive mode. You will attempt to defend against attacks only so long as this does not prevent you from performing any of your own attacks. You will perform at a minimum level of confidence of thirty percent, or as near to this as you are able. You will scatter your attacks at least ten percent of the time.
  • Snap: In this mode, one is heavily prioritizing defense while attempting, when possible, to intersperse one's defensive efforts with numerous attacks. The focus in these attacks is on quantity rather than quality, quickly lashing out to keep the enemy off-balance then returning to a defensive posture as quickly as possible. You will attempt to defend against attacks so long as this leaves you with at least one attack in a given round. You will scatter your attacks at least ten percent of the time.
  • Studious: Fighting in a generally balanced fashion, devoting careful attention to noticing one's mistakes and successes so as to learn as much as possible from the battle. You will attempt to defend against attacks so long as this costs you no more than one of your own attacks in a given round, and leaves you with at least one attack.
