Okay, here's how I worked through this quest.
You have 12 keys to start off with. One key is either lighter or heavier than the rest, and it is that key that opes the chest. First use of the balance, put 3 keys in each pan, weigh them, and see what happens.
If the scales tip, that means the key is in one of the two pans. Pay attention to which way the scales moved. Take all three keys from the left pan, and replace them with 3 unweighed keys. If on the second weighing, the pans don't move, the magick key is one of the three in your hands. Take all of the keys from both pans. Place one of the suspected keys in each pan, and keep the third in your hand. If the scales balance, the key in your hand is the one that opens the chest. If the scale tips, whichever pan tips the same direction as the first weighing is the correct key. If, however, the pans still tip, the correct key is one of the three in the right pan. remove all of the keys from the left pan and drop them. Take 2 keys from the right pan, place one in the left pan, and weigh again. If the scales tip the same way, it is the key in the right pan; if the scales tip the opposite direction, it is the key in the left pan. If the scales balance, it is the key in your hand.
If on the first weighing neither pan moves, that means it is one of the six in your hands. Take 2 keys from each pan and put 2 unweighed keys in each pan. Weigh again. If on the second weighing, the pans remain stationary, it is one of the two unweighed keys. Take one key from the left pan, and place one unweighed key in the left pan. If the scales are stationary, use the last unweighed key. If the scales tip, use the key you just placed in the left pan. If on the second weighing the scales tip, is is one of the four keys you just placed in the pans. Mentally label those four keys 1, 2, 3, and 4. 1 and 2 are in the left pan, 3 and 4 in the right pan. Replace key 4 with a previously weighed key. Move key 1 to the right pan, and move key 3 to the left pan. Weigh again. If the scales tip the same direction, use key 2. If the direction tips, use key 3. If the scales balance, use key 4. --Bladestorm 01:55, 16 December 2007 (EST)
