Iron is a reasonably plentiful metal, and though the techniques needed to effectively work it are less simple than those for metals like brass, tin, and bronze, working it is not extremely difficult once those techniques are known. Its relative hardness and strength is a considerable advantage over those metals, particularly with respect to crafting weapons and armour.
