Color Name Terrain Category Description
Ground Terrains: Terrains located on the surface of the planet.
SlateGray Arctic Ground Cold terrains.
LightSlateGray Tundra Ground/Arctic/Taiga A frozen plain.
Olive Taiga Ground/Arctic A marshy coniferous forest, usually located between tundra and plains.
SpringGreen Plains Ground Level lands, particularly those covering a broad stretch of land with few variations in altitude.
DarkKhaki Grasslands Ground/Plains Plains regions dominated by grasses. Primarily treeless.

LimeGreen Meadow Ground/Plains/Grasslands "Tame" grasslands, particularly when used for the growing of hay and other tall grasses.
Green Prairie Grounds/Plains/Grasslands Grasslands with more brush and small trees added.
OliveDrab Scrub Ground/Plains A tract covered with dwarf or stunted trees.
DarkOliveGreen Hills Ground A rolling plain. Often these are foothills where plains meet mountain ranges.
DimGray Mountains Ground Any part of a landscape which projects conspicuously over its surroundings. Generally it must be several thousand feet tall or more.
YellowGreen Swamp Ground Regions of land generally saturated with water.
ForestGreen Forest Ground A dense growth of trees and underbrush covering a large tract of land.
DarkGreen Jungle Ground A virtually impenetrable thicket or mass of vegetation.
Tan Sandy Ground Terrains whose dominant material underfoot is sand.
SandyBrown Desert Ground/Sandy An arid region lacking moisture to support significant vegetation.
Khaki Beach Ground/Sandy A sandy region where an ocean or lake meets land.

Water Terrains: Waterborne terrains. Unless the terrain 'surface' is present, contents are assumed to be wholly submerged.
DarkSeaGreen Bottom Water The bottom of any body of water, that things can walk on.
DodgerBlue Fresh Water Specifically non-salt water.
RoyalBlue Lake Water/Fresh Large bodies of fresh water surrounded by land.
CornflowerBlue River Water/Fresh Flowing water conduits.
SeaGreen Salt Water Briny water.
MediumSeaGreen Ocean Water/Salt Great expanses of salt water.
Teal Deeps Water Serious depths, where pressure is much greater and little light reaches.
LightSeaGreen Surface Water Interface between water and air, where swimming skill is important to avoid inhaling water.
Turquoise Shallows (S) Water/Surface Shallow areas where no swimming skill tests are necessary to avoid inhaling water. Also includes the terrain type 'bottom', since in this case the surface essentially is the bottom.

LightGrey Rocky Coast Water/Surface The edge of water, but not a gentle sloping beach.

Underground Terrains: Subsurface terrains.
Peru Cave Underground Large open spaces below the earth's surface.
Sienna Tunnel Underground Underground passages and corridors.
SaddleBrown Solid Earth Underground Areas underground that are completely filled with earth (filler space for maps).
Air Terrains: Aerial terrain.
LightCyan Cloud Air Upon or inside a cloud in the sky.
LightSkyBlue Updraft Air Areas where the dominant air currents are rising.
SkyBlue Air Air Empty air?
SteelBlue Downdraft Air Areas where the dominant air currents are falling.
CadetBlue Solid Air Aerial terrains where one does not need to be able to fly to maintain one's position -- skybridges, solid clouds, etc.
Dark Slate Gray Stratosphere Air/Unbreathable Extremely high altitude; little air and low pressure. Also combined as a subset of the terrain type 'unbreathable'.
Unbreathable Terrains:Environments hostile to any form of life.
Black Space Unbreathable Supra-atmospheric vacuum.
Urban Terrains: Terrains significantly modified by intelligent life. May potentially be combined with any other sort of terrain, though simply 'ground' is the most common.
Gray Building Urban Some sort of sheltered construction.
RosyBrown Castle Urban/Building Self-sufficient fortified enclaves.
DarkGray Keep Urban/Building Larger version of towers, often located within castles.
Purple Palace Urban/Building Extremely large, impressive buildings generally housing cultural VIPs.
Gainsboro Street Urban/Building The thoroughfares and byways of urban areas. Includes the terrain 'road'.
Maroon Temple Urban/Building Places of worship. Often combined with 'sacrosanct' and subsets thereof.
Silver Tower Urban/Building Multilevel buildings often seen as distinct from the surrounding urban area.
DarkSlateBlue Tavern Urban/Building A tavern, bar or any building where one is likely to find things like bar stools, bottles, etc.
Vehicle Terrains: Artificial vehicles of one sort or another.
Chocolate Ship Vehicle Waterfaring vehicles.
Brown Wagon Vehicle Wagons, carts, and so forth.
Tricky Ones: (overlapping or otherwise weird)
none Plateau Ground An elevated tract of land, used as a modifier to other terrain types.

none Maze Other Convoluted areas difficult to navigate, whether urban, subterranean, or otherwise.
none Dream Other Life is but a dream here.
Trail Terrains: Has some feature making it more conducive to travel than ordinary terrain of its type.
none Road Trail Contains a definitely artificial feature making it more conducive to travel.
Sacrosanct Terrains: Areas that are sacred for one reason or another.
none Holy Sacrosanct Areas sacred to good forces/deities.
none Unholy Sacrosanct Areas sacred to evil forces/deities.
none Chaos Sacrosanct Areas dedicated to the forces/deities of randomness.
none Order Sacrosanct Areas dedicated to the forces/deities of law.
Enchanted Terrains: Regions with magical effects of some kind laid upon them.
