Looks like rank advancement is primarily locked behind levels gained since you joined the Ulfhednar, but might not be the only contribution. Just running off some Starhound hints.

Confirming that it seems half-humans can join and so can thonds and eolon.

Yeti can not, not human enough, even though they can have the norsk culture.
