Autonomon

Autonomous Mobile Objects -- their analogs are referred to in some games as 'mobs,' and often by players as 'NPCs.' Each of these is misleading in its own way; autonomoi are rarely autonomous (that's what daemons are for), they are not crowds of angry torch-wielding villagers, and few possess the depth to be called "characters". Thinking of them as Mobile Objects is probably the best way to go, but that's not nearly as nice-sounding a term.
