Adding some things here that seem correct but as so much is random in Riddlemasters I can't be 100% sure. Even vague info can help others though so add away if you find things that seem right.
Kenning
Kenning various things seems to change the chance you get certain type and elements of spells. Way back Marco mentioned nothing but chance helps the tier of the spell though.
The energy of the thing kenned seems to make it more likely to get the same or the opposite element. This seems to included amalgams. Purely magick powered things seems to be entirely random as far as elements go. Have not received anything magick element outside of the always there guild hall spells (convert, minor attack, teleport) Magic rings, potions, and misc stuff seem to more frequently give energy converts and teleports. Weapons seem to have a higher chance of a weapon summoning spell
Spell slots and mastery
Recently got about 15 or so more spell slots than I had previously before unmastered spells got knocked off and the only thing I noticed changing is that I added a spec of psychology and went from 40 to 79 in it, so a spec of psychology might well be worth it for that alone unless it was something else I didn't even notice happening.
Storytelling and scholarship seem to also affect the amount of spells and how many you can master but they haven't changed enough since I joined to give any numbers at all, this is just from comparing with other Riddlemasters.
Misc
Teleports are generally to the room you are in when you ken the item so you can try and set up specific teleport points that way.
