The Explorers are a loose band of like-minded individuals whose primary reason for association is to maintain the Explorer's Guide, a storehouse of information on all of Lost Souls.
Spoiler warning: information below includes details, such as solutions to puzzles or quest procedures, that you may prefer to discover on your own.

Abilities
As far as I can tell all of the Explorer abilities were made mooy with the changes to the skill system. The only ability that is still unique to the Explorers is the ability to write articles for the Explorer's Guide.
And you get a free Explorer's Guide.
Restrictions
These are pretty much gone as well as far as I can tell. Used to be you couldn't wear restrictive armour. I think that's taken care of now with the new skill system.
End of spoiler information.
