Contents

Introduction

Okay, Hello. This page exists so I can fool around here without mucking up anybody else's hard work (as I tend to do because I'm a bumbling fool most of the time). I'm gonna try to be a cartographer (feel free to snigger) and use this page to tinker with different ways of creating new maps for, well pretty much everywhere. I want to create a system that involves the use of colored ASCII art in a structured way to make creating new maps a lot easier. With that said, please feel free to leave feedback etc etc on the discussion page!

Speculation

First I want to establish what information is useful in a map. World Maps:

  • Terrain (also flight needed/no flight needed?)
    • Characterize by what fieldcraft skill applies?
  • Cities etc.
  • Paths
  • Altitude

City Maps

  • Shops

Both:

  • Can't go there messages - some way to include them
  • Notes on people, animals and places seen and where
  • Some sort of coordinate location system
  • Links to stable places on the map

  • Figure out what all the terrain colors should be
  • Figure out what symbols to use on the map: I want to use symbols for the placeholders that change depending on whether you have to swim, fly, etc to get there
  • Finish fleshing out this map with terrain/locations
  • Organize the key and make it universal
  • Run around making sure everything is accurate and all the coordinates are here
  • Link all the dots on the side to the adjacent areas

Other Notes

Feedback on this scheme would be greatly appreciated: I'm not entirely sure that this way is easier than making actual PNGs of the maps, but it works better for me since all I need is a browser to edit it and I use a bunch of private and public computers etc etc.

Specifically, does this width work on your monitor? I'm gonna check it on all of mine to see...
