The svirfneblin, or deep gnomes, dwell in the depths of the earth, where also are found the drow, duergar, and other beings. Unlike the drow and duergar, their society has not split off from that of the surface gnomes; they remain quite friendly, and both speak the Nanomi language. The svirfneblin have been forced by their harsh environment to develop in different directions than their surface cousins, displaying hardier minds than bodies; due to the privations and cramped conditions of underground life, svirfneblin are also slightly smaller than surface gnomes. They share with their neighbors the duergar a great predisposition toward psychic abilities, particularly in the disciplines related to control of motion and energy, and have a nearly-unrivaled degree of psychic sensitivity, with nearly every svirfneblin developing at least one psychic talent at some point in their lifetime.
Svirfneblin generally live for 200 years, and have eyes that are well-adapted to dark conditions but suffer in light. Their learning rate is somewhat slower than that of their surface cousins, although they enjoy scholarship equally; in particular, they have the peculiar talent of autodidaction, enabling them to learn skills even without formal training in some circumstances.
