Gnomes are a small, quick people noted for their quickness of wit, their physical hardiness, and their penchant for scholarship; many gnomes aspire to become scholars, and some even achieve ability in the magickal arts, where they display a particular talent with the art of illusions. Gnomes can see in the dark, live for an average of 150 years, and speak the Nanomi language. They are most at home in forests and in the burrows they construct beneath those forest, though some groups of gnomes make their homes in stranger places. Their learning rate is above average, though not as pronounced as that of humans. Some gnomes also enjoy practicing the arts of craftsmanship and artificing, building both beautiful carvings and statues as well as intricate mechanisms; many of the preeminent clockmakers in Aedaris are gnomes.
