Description

Sisters of the Coven have the ability to bond with avian totemic familiars via witchcraft. It is a good idea to trust your familiar upon bonding, to be sure it is able to keep up with you while moving. Note that this does not help if your character is flying and the familiar cannot, or in some other circumstances such as swimming or falling.

Spoiler warning: information below includes details, such as solutions to puzzles or quest procedures, that you may prefer to discover on your own.

Locations

The Coven's guildmistress now stays at a wooded dell on an island in Gardagh at the coordinates 23, 20, 0. (185, 182, 0 Global)

Halea looks Sethae up and down, sizing it up. Halea asks, ~*&. Bring me the tail of
a rat, so that you might understand darkness. Bring me the hand of an angel, so that
you might understand death. Bring me a walking stick, so that you might understand freedom.
Bring me a coin, so that you might understand want. Bring me a sword, so that you might
understand pain, and a thond's eye, that you might understand honor. Bring me a flute, so
that you might understand joy, and the wing of a bird, that you might understand life. And
when you bring me these things, bring yourself, naked and shivering, that you might feel
the stars on your face and taste the ocean with your skin. .&*~
  • There are many easy rats in the Losthaven and Liathyr sewers to kill for a tail
  • The hand of an Angel is harder to get. Many prospective Coven characters will probably need help getting one. For those higher leveled, there is an angel on the ninth floor of the Shadow tower, northwest room. (Warning - He is usually wielding Heavensfire and seems to use some holy magick. Undead beware!)
  • Walking sticks can be bought at some stores. For those more murder-inclined, Armitage is almost always carrying a suitable one.
  • Coins are as common as they sound, shouldn't be hard to find one.
  • Swords are similarly common.
  • You can find easy-to-kill Thonds in Losthaven and Halfmoon Bay, if you can't take on the swarms of berserkers in Kolond.
  • Flutes can be found in Liathyr music shops for cheap.
  • There are many static load vultures on the top of the tower of the outpost in the desert, where Xi Feng Ming is entered

peril. .&*~
The white-skinned female human says, ~*&. There are still two more possibilities, rarer among us, perhaps because most
of those who would join the Coven are a poor temperamental fit for the two extremes of fighting and caretaking. In any
case, those that seek the swan become White Maidens, keepers of the light, resplendent lovers of the sky. They are the
warriors of the Coven, compared to the rest of us at least, and use witchcraft to bend the light to aid them in the
battle. Then there are the seekers of the goose, the Gray Dames, healers of the flesh, caretakers of the earth. They
are the witchdoctresses of the Coven, as it were, masters of herbal and magickal means of healing wounds, diseases, and
curses. .&*~

Bond Failure Messages

Ritual of the Shawl

The ritual of the shawl must be performed in the clear light of the full moon. In addition, it must be done accompanied by only your familiar while naked on a snowy mountain.

The reward appears to be the same dress given at joining, so it is useful if you have lost it. Perhaps there are other benefits, but it is unclear. There was also a large experience gain (~156,000 at level 157).

Requirements certainly include poetry, vocalization, and other language skills. You can indeed fail mid-ritual, and the cost is a fairly large amount of spirit (~200-500 per attempt it seemed) and chakra damage. You may reattempt the ritual, and it is advisable to do so as you may have different results.

Some notes:

Changing to native language yielded better results, but that has not been confirmed a corollary.

You may use the mountain ranges in the Northlands as a location.

Your familiar must be present, and not in your inventory to perform the ritual.

Syntax:

perform the Ritual of the Shawl

Specialty Access

While it may seem that the Coven are very similar to the Verynvelyrae or Zetesai, there are profound differences in specialty access. Generally, the Coven are granted a very large amount of magickal skill access and affinity access, while the Verynvelyrae are given far less, even with the same familiar types. Charms based on skills (which is, most of them) will tend to have a higher potential for the Coven, and some special attack maneuvers (e.g. those granted by the Owl) will hit more accurately and do more damage.

It's worth noting that all magickal skills related to your bond gain 1 bonus specialty point on bonding - this is not related to the outdated gain of bonus specialty points from bonds of yore. A Goose bond, for example:

Skill Bon Tot Max Min Att
Earth Affinity 1 5 14 0 Vit
Geoturgy 1 5 15 0 Int
Abjuration 1 1 12 0 Int
Viturgy 1 1 15 0 Int
Kalaturgy 1 1 15 0 Int

Trainers

  • Halea, who stays at 23, 20 in Gardagh
  • Esme, who wanders around -6, 16 in Gardagh - does not speak Anglic, but does speak Graecan
  • Lynda Xenetha, who apparently spawns in a random location in Gardagh and wanders around a small radius; she can be scried.
  • Leah, Diamond street in Losthaven.

Incompatible Affiliations

Coven members are forbidden from joining affiliations of type "agent", which includes the Stalkers of the Gate. They are also forbidden from becoming "malevolent" such as the Synousia Algesis. Can't join Apollonian Disciples as a hedonist guild. Can't become warriors or soldiers which rules out Weapons of Vengeance, Fianna, Chosen of Vashanka, Maidens of the Spear, even for the White Maiden warrior sect. Coven members are also barred from wearing heavy armor, so while one can be a member of the Hawkmen one cannot wear the helmet.

End of spoiler information.
