Introduction
Hello there! My name is Xailor and on this page you will find aliases to travel from Losthaven to anywhere in the Prime plane, compiled by yours truly. The best part? These aliases can be used WITHOUT FLIGHT (with or without terrain following mode)! That's right, you don't even need to fly! If you are going to travel without flight, however, you can be sure that you are going to need to climb and swim. But you don't care about that! All you need to know is that all the walkthroughs listed here assume that your starting point is (-21, -24, 0) in Cimbra (right outside Losthaven). Oh yeah, one more thing. After every list there is a set of commands enclosed in square brackets. Those are the command(s) that you will need to enter the area. Have fun!
About the aliases
If you just want to skip down to the bottom to see the aliases and start killing things, I don't blame you. But if you are even a little bit curious about the properties these alias have, read on.
General
Why Losthaven?
Because it's a popular city, but more importantly, because the pre-generated character for new players starts out in Losthaven; I hope this list can help old players but also help new players get to an area without worrying about getting lost or killed (or worse).
How long did it take to compile this list?
I worked on it off and on for approximately 1-2 months. I figured out a few mathematical theorems that applied to a sort of "discrete space" that the Lost Souls main map is equivalent to, and used them to create mathematically optimized speedwalks.
Is there an alias for every location in this list?
No. You will not find an alias to any place inside Hanoma or Kentaur Isle (because they're pretty small). Also, remember that this list is constantly updated as new places are discovered/removed.
Ten Aliases
The following is a list of ten aliases that are not mathematically "optimal":
- Losthaven to Banir Lok
- Losthaven to Caves of Sionell
- Losthaven to the Labyrinth of Knossos
- Losthaven to the Lair of Girish
- Losthaven to Lobaan a Aislynn
- Losthaven to Muspelheim
- Losthaven to the Ordo Zephyrius Mutatoris guildhall
- Losthaven to Sloan
- Losthaven to Talaxia
- Losthaven to Thanatos
Except for these, all other aliases use the least number of moves (mathematically) possible. I suspect seven of the above ten aliases do use the least number of moves possible, but I cannot prove it (without a brute-force algorithm)
How is this possible?
Math.
Miscellaneous
It might interest you to know that almost all the aliases listed here are a set of directions from A to B with the least number of steps mathematically needed (whether or not you have flight and/or intangibility is irrelevant); call aliases with this property "optimal". For example, a path from Losthaven to the Temple of Apollo is given by:
go 37s, 123se, 12ne
The one in the list below is:
go 38se, seu, 11se, 2seu, 4se, sed, se, 2sed, 11se, 3su, seu, sed, 2sd, se, 2su, seu, sed, 3sd, se, 3su, seu, 4sed, 3se, seu, 7se, sed, 9se, seu, 2se, sed, 28se
The one given in the list below is the longer, uglier one because the latter path is "optimal" and the former is not (that is, the former alias contains "unnecessary" movements). The distance between them? 24 rooms. Meaning the longer (10 times longer) alias gets you from Losthaven to the Temple of Apollo in 24 rooms less; moreover, because this path is "optimal" it reaches the temple in the same number of rooms (without flight) that it would take a person with intangibility, assuming they mathematically optimized their path. Is it worth using such a complicated-looking alias? I think so.
Stated in a slightly general way, an "optimal" path is an alias that gets you from Losthaven to your destination, without flight, in N moves ('moves' interchangeable with 'rooms') where N is the least number of rooms you would have to cross even if you were equipped with flight and intangibility. Needless to say, there are areas where a path with this property does not exist (meaning there are a few areas that can be reached slightly faster with intangibility than by walking there without flight) but there are not a lot; out of all the aliases listed here, only ten or less of them are not "optimal". That is very surprising.
Almost all aliases here (except for ten or less) are "optimal" in the sense that the least number of rooms are crossed when moving from A to B. The following may sound kind of technical at first, but if you think about it, it makes sense: a path is "optimal" when it consists strictly of the combinations of one direction and the adjacent directions to said direction. So an "optimal" path from Losthaven to a place like the Lair of Girish (south of our starting point, Losthaven) can only include the combinations of south and the adjacent directions to south. That is, the path can only include south, southeast, southwest, south-up, southeast-up, southwest-up, south-down, southeast-down, and southwest-down (another way to think about this is that the path only contains directions with south "in them"). Even though the no-flight constraint eliminates all directions incorporating up, it is still possible to go south-up, southwest-up, or southeast-up if there is a medium through which to climb/swim through. The set of allowable directions is thus the one listed above. The path from Losthaven to the Lair of Girish given in the list below is:
go 4se, 4sw, 64s, su, 25s, sd, 8s, 164se, 4seu, su, 2sd, d
This path incorporates directions that are not in the set above (one-down) and thus the path is not "optimal". This means that a path that travels from Losthaven to the Lair of Girish in less than 4+4+64+1+25+1+8+164+4+1+2+1 = 279 steps does, in fact, exists (with flight/intantibility). What is the difference between 279 and the steps in the "optimal" path? One. How do I know that? Because the only direction in the path that is not in the set of allowable movement is just [d]; since it is not in the set it is "unnecessary" (if, instead, the alias had ended with [2d, n] then the difference would be three). Even using flight and intangibility there are no paths from Losthaven to the Lair of Girish that use less than 278 steps (challenge?), however, there are paths that use exactly 278 steps.
If you understood all of that, I think it's worth mentioning that the sum of all the movements of a "non-optimal" alias minus the sum of the "unnecessary" movements in the alias is N (mentioned above) only when the alias is of a specific mathematical "form". This means that we can't perform the same analysis on the path from Losthaven to the Temple of Apollo given above by
go 37s, 123se, 12ne
because if we do, we can see that the only movements in the path that would not be in the set of allowable directions (the temple is south of Losthaven) is [12ne], and thus we would conclude that the least number of rooms you would need to cross in order to reach the temple, with flight and/or intangibility, is (37+123+12) - (12) = 160. In reality, the least number of rooms is 148 (add the directions in the alias listed below for proof).
Warnings
Use these aliases at your own risk. If you slip while climbing you can hurt yourself. More importantly, remember that if you are not flying and your climbing/swimming skills aren't high enough you could end up somewhere completely different (if you fall while climbing or "struggle in vain" while swimming, the alias will not work); this could make it difficult to find your way back. Also remember that none of these aliases give any information whatsoever about the destination; it is up to you to do the research. More than once (I shamefully admit) I've walked into an ordinary looking cave only to be instantly killed by the dragon waiting inside. You have been warned.
