Introduction
Hello there! My name is Xailor and on this page you will find aliases to travel from Losthaven to anywhere in the Prime plane, compiled by yours truly. The best part? These aliases can be used WITHOUT FLIGHT (with or without terrain following mode)! That's right, you don't even need to fly! Just copy and paste one of these aliases, and off you go! If you are going to travel without flight however, you can be sure that you are going to need to climb and swim. But you don't care about that! All you need to know is that all the walkthroughs listed here assume that your starting point is (-21, -24, 0) in Cimbra (right outside Losthaven). Oh yeah, one more thing. After every list there is a set of commands enclosed in square brackets. Those are the command(s) that you will need to enter the area. Have fun!
Warnings
A few things to keep in mind about the speedwalks:
- If you slip while climbing you can hurt yourself.
- If you cannot hold your breath for long, you might not want to travel to Esartur or Tenochlan (without flight that is) because you have to swim for long periods of time.
- If you are not flying and your climbing/swimming skills aren't high enough you could end up somewhere completely different (if you fall while climbing or "struggle in vain" while swimming, the alias will not work); this could make it difficult to find your way back.
- None of the aliases here give any information whatsoever about the destination. Expect the unexpected.
Use these aliases at your own risk. You have been warned.
About the Speedwalks
If you just want to skip down to the bottom to see the aliases and start killing things, I don't blame you, but if you are even a little bit curious about the these aliases and how they came to be, read on.
General
Why Losthaven?
Because it's a popular city, but more importantly, because the pre-generated character for new players starts out in Losthaven; I hope this list can help old players but also help new players get to an area without worrying about getting lost or killed (or worse).
How long did it take to compile this list?
I worked on it off and on for approximately 1-2 months. I figured out a few mathematical theorems that applied to a sort of "discrete space" that the Lost Souls main map is equivalent to, and used them to create mathematically optimized speedwalks.
Is there an alias for every location in this list?
No. Some places cannot be entered from the Prime plane, so you will not find an alias for those areas. You will also not find an alias to any area inside another area. For example, there is a speedwalk from Losthaven to Loch Nether, but you will not find a speedwalk from Losthaven to the city of Yathryn (because the city is inside Loch Nether). Finally, remember that this list is constantly updated as new places are discovered/removed.
How were these aliases generated/verified?
I simply used the Prime plane map (it's huge). I used paper and pencil to derive mathematical theorems, and a computer to generate (and simplify) most of the aliases. If you would like to see a larger version of each region, click on the name of the region you would like to see, in the list of aliases below.
How is this possible?
Math.
Ten Aliases
The following is a list of ten aliases that are not mathematically optimized:
- Losthaven to Banir Lok
- Losthaven to Caves of Sionell
- Losthaven to the Lair of Girish
- Losthaven to Lobaan a Aislynn
- Losthaven to Muspelheim
- Losthaven to Azure Hall
- Losthaven to Sinbyen
- Losthaven to Sloan
- Losthaven to Talaxia
- Losthaven to Thanatanaos
Except for the ten aliases above, all other aliases use the least number of moves mathematically possible. I suspect seven of the above ten aliases do, in fact, use the least number of moves possible, but I cannot prove it.
Miscellaneous
It might interest you to know that almost all the aliases listed here are a set of directions from A to B with the least number of steps mathematically needed (whether or not you have flight and/or intangibility is irrelevant); aliases with this property are "optimal".
- Informal definition of an "optimal alias":
An "optimal alias" is a speedwalk that gets you from Losthaven to your destination, without flight, in N moves ('moves' interchangeable with 'rooms') where N is the least number of rooms you would have to cross even if you were equipped with flight and intangibility.
Needless to say, there are areas where an alias with this property does not exist (meaning there are a few areas that can be reached slightly faster with flight/intangibility than by walking there without flight) but there are not a lot; out of all the aliases listed here, only ten or less of them are not "optimal". That is very surprising. The ten "un-optimized" speedwalks definitely have an optimal alias, but I cannot prove I have the optimal aliases for those ten areas.
- Formal definition of an "optimal alias":
The following may sound kind of technical at first, but if you think about it, it makes sense: an alias is optimal when it consists strictly of the combinations of one direction and the adjacent directions to that direction.
For example, an optimal speedwalk from Losthaven to a place like the Lair of Girish (south of our starting point, Losthaven) can only include the combinations of south and the adjacent directions to south. That is, the alias can only include south, southeast, southwest, south-up, southeast-up, southwest-up, south-down, southeast-down, and southwest-down (another way to think about this is that the alias only contains directions with south "in them"). Even though the no-flight constraint eliminates all directions incorporating up, it is still possible to go south-up, southwest-up, or southeast-up if there is a medium through which to climb/swim through. The set of allowable directions is thus the one listed above.
- Examples of an "optimal alias":
It is very easy to see when an alias is optimal. Look at the alias from Losthaven to Valathyr given in the list below:
go 9ne, 2n, nw, ne, 6n
This alias is clearly optimal since every direction has the letter 'n' in it. It consists strictly of the combinations of north and the adjacent directions to north; every "step" brings you closer to your destination, which is north of your starting point, Losthaven. Arguably, a more optimal alias could be generated to get to Valathyr, where you only need to go northeast and then north; this alias would be shorter and still be mathematically optimized:
go 9ne, 10n
This is not done because the alias for Valathyr in the list below avoids water; indeed, most aliases from Losthaven to an area on the continent of Almeria do this. Note that the sum of both aliases is the same (9+2+1+1+6 = 9+10). This is because both speedwalks have the same endpoint and consist only of directions with north "in them". An implication of this is that if you randomly write down directions that have "one direction in common", then it will the optimal alias to whatever endpoint you reach.
As another example, consider this alias from Losthaven to the Temple of Apollo:
go 37s, 123se, 12ne
The one in the list below is:
go 38se, seu, 11se, 2seu, 4se, sed, se, 2sed, 11se, 3su, seu, sed, 2sd, se, 2su, seu, sed, 3sd, se, 3su, seu, 4sed, 3se, seu, 7se, sed, 9se, seu, 2se, sed, 28se
The one given in the list below is the longer, uglier one because the latter alias is optimal and the former is not (that is, the former alias contains unnecessary movements). The distance between them? 24 rooms. Meaning the longer-looking (10 times longer) alias gets you from Losthaven to the Temple of Apollo in 24 rooms less than the shorter-looking alias; moreover, because this alias is "optimal" it reaches the temple in the same number of rooms (without flight) that it would take a person with intangibility and flight, assuming they mathematically optimized their speedwalk. What this means is that, without teleportation, it is mathematically impossible to reach the Temple of Apollo in less than
38+1+11+2+4+1+1+2+11+3+1+1+2+1+2+1+1+3+1+3+1+4+3+1+7+1+9+1+2+1+28 = 148
148 moves. Is it worth using such a complicated-looking alias? I think so.
I think it is interesting to note that there exists more than one optimal alias from point A to point B in the Prime plane map (except when the system has extremely specific restrictions). This is because the main map is a sort of "discrete space" and not continuous, unlike our intuitive notion of space; instead of there being a unique shortest path between two points, there always exists at least one shortest path, but there usually are a lot of other shortest paths because the combinations of possible paths grows quickly with increasing distance.
